Case Study: Drive Times from Every Austrian Postal Code to the Nearest BILLA Plus

A repeatable Python and OpenStreetMap workflow that calculates drive distance and time from every Austrian postal code area to its nearest BILLA Plus store, delivered as an Excel dataset.

Context

A location-intelligence analysis for retail planning in Austria.

The challenge

How far is every postal code area in Austria from the nearest BILLA Plus supermarket? The answer had to be accurate, cover the whole country, and be easy to rerun when stores change.

Approach

  • Collected Austrian postal code boundaries and store locations
  • Automated nearest-store selection with spatial analysis
  • Calculated drive distance and drive time on the OpenStreetMap road network with Python, GeoPandas and OSMnx
  • Generated the Excel report from the same reusable script

Results

  • Drive time and distance from every Austrian postal code area to its nearest BILLA Plus
  • A repeatable workflow the client can rerun when the store network changes
